As the title states, what's your opinion on Algorithms? The internet is FILLED with it. Everything is all about algorithms so I'm curious at your takes on it?

Here's mine: I HATE them... The only algorithm I've ever found to be half decent is oddly enough Instagram. The rest are awful. I hate the concept of designing your site to try and hold onto your attention as much as possible in the worst ways possible. Instead of giving us freedom of expressions, they strip that, and instead shove feeds after feeds down our throat. "HEY!!!! You were on this post for 2.6 seconds longer than normal. You must LOVE this content! *Proceeds to show you that content for a week straight*". It makes it so only the biggest people get seen 90% of the time, and the rest of the content is just silence in the void. There's no more natural growth now, it's all artificial and it is entirely monetization based at the cost of the users. People can't blow up anymore, and if a single thing does you have to try and milk that as much as possible while also being forced to cater everything around that one post if you want to be successful. If you don't then there's not even a point in posting anything anymore half the time unless it's short form content. I personally just wish we went back to the 10 tag days. Hashtags, youtube tags, whatever. It'd feature content with similar tags and that is it whilst also forcing you to figure out what tags you'd like to make your video about. It's simple, and it's easier to go down the 'rabbit hole' which you simply cannot do anymore with modern day algorithms. You're NEVER shown content without much views anymore :')

I will admit, at first I thought algorithms would be a good idea, but the more they have been implemented, the more I realise just how much I miss. There have been times when I will watch a video because it piqued my interest, but does that mean I will always like that type of content? Not at all, but algorithms make it that way, and it's frustrating.

Youtube has gotten the worse for it. Why do I need to subscribe, follow, hit the bell icon, all to STILL not see their content... Just let me click subscribe and get notified when they come out with content. Now it seems like it just recommends you the same videos you've already seen. If it's music that's all it will recommend you is the same 5 songs on repeat it seems lol

I agree! I feel they made so many changes, they messed something up somewhere and now it is just a mess.

I tend to just now go to the channels I have an interest in and check if they have made new videos myself because YouTube doesn't always notify.

I actually think the idea behind algorithms isn’t terrible. When you’ve got platforms like YouTube dealing with a million hours of new content every single day, having some kind of interest‑based sorting system makes sense. Without it, everything would just be noise.

But the way they work in the real world… that’s where I’m not a fan. They’re way too reactive to anything “new,” so the moment you watch one video outside your usual interests, the whole feed shifts like you’ve suddenly changed personalities. And on top of that, they bury the stuff you actually want to see: subscribed channels, friends’ posts, creators you intentionally follow, all in favor of whatever the system thinks will keep you scrolling.

If it were something like 90% content from people you chose to follow and maybe 10% new suggestions based on your history, I’d be fine with that. That feels balanced. But the current setup flips that ratio, and it just makes everything feel artificial.

Honestly, I’d rather have no algorithm at all than the ones we’re stuck with today. Not to mention, we are really dealing with them focusing on content addiction for profits vs actually being user focused.

I must admit I have never given it much thought. Saying that, I am in favour of it, in the digital world, for finding the fastest route on Google Maps when travelling.
