Smartphones: a tool to bring people closer or cause of separation?

What's your take on smartphones, with it you can easily communicate with anyone irrespective or their location or even time zones, but at the same time some persons have become distant from society, finding it hard communicate with the world around them due to their phone addiction. Do you think smartphones brings us together, or simply cause separation?

Smartphones bringing people closer is dependent on the person's involved. I have seen people gather around a smartphone regularly to watch movies or TV shows. For some others, they see their smartphones as their life companion and won't even talk to the next human beside them. For those people, smartphones have successfully detached them from people and made them to seek companionship from digital devices. I am a tech freak that engages with my smartphone often. But I make out time to connect with people around me.

Well this situation is a serious one and I have a mixed feeling about it. On one hand, I can do video calls with my friends abroad anytime using my smartphone and that's a good development, but on the other hand, people can use the phone instead of them coming together and that can also cause separation as well. I have been to a party where everybody was just scrolling through their phone instead of gisting, it was so boring because nobody was even talking. Above all, I believe balance is very important because smartphone is supposed to make things better and that is why the way we use them matters a lot. It should bring family together, not separate them.
