Something I always used to do with my mum when we used to get a lot of thunderstorms when I was a kid was I would sit in my mum's bed with her, and we could see right across before the houses were built opposite us, and we used to watch the lightning. I was always afraid of thunder and lightning, but my mum always used to tell me to count when I saw the lightning until I heard the rumble, and that would tell me how far away the storm was.

Counting during the thunderstorm always helped me feel calmer during a thunderstorm, and I taught my kids the same thing.
