I have been brought up by my mom as a single parent. I had my grandparents who were loving authorities in my growing up years. I am fortunate to be brought up in a very loving and safe space. We got all the nurturing and nourishing. But yes, tough love was also shown at the needed times. Parents and elders had an upper hand and they were the authorities till we attended maturity.
I am doing the same as a parent. I am loving, caring and give them a lot of safe space to be themselves. But then there are boundaries, rules and clear instructions given. Certain things are non negotiable.
I hated such tough love at young age but now I am very thankful to my loving authorities. They have shaped me in a much better and balanced person. My daughters might have had some hard.feelings too but sooner and later they too will get the importance pf it. I hope that they carry it forward to their upbringing too. My elder one who is now in the outside world figuring her way put has already started mentioning it and thanking us for that tough love.
